     This memorial website was created to remember James Close who was born in Dubuque, Iowa on March 5, 1942 and passed away on November 4, 2008. He will live forever in our memories and hearts.

     James A. “Tonto” Close, 66, of Pekin, formerly of Peoria and Dubuque, passed away at 10:50 a.m. on Tuesday, November 4, 2008, peacefully at home.

     James was born March 5, 1942 in Dubuque, IA, a son of Francis C. and Evelyn A. (Rahe) Close. Jim married Sharon J. (Dean) on March 18, 2004 in Mountain Home, AR. She survives.

     He is also survived by his sons, Dennis and David Close, both of East Peoria; daughter, Kimberly (Jon) Hillman of Pekin; four grandchildren; brothers, Jack F. (Jeanette) Close and Jay C. (Pam) Close, all of Dubuque and Jerry W. (Jean) Close of Riverside, CA; sisters, Joan M. (Don) Merz of Dubuque and Judy A. (Wayne) East of Linden, VA; and several nieces and nephews.

     Jim was a graduate of the first graduating class of Dubuque Wahlert High School in 1960. After graduating high school, he was a U.S. Air Force Vietnam Veteran, serving in Iceland for four years. He later graduated from Illinois Central College, with a degree in Business Administration.

     He enjoyed collecting antique buses and airplanes and was active in the Brothers Bowling Tournament in Pekin. He was also a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Pekin. In 1999, Jim retired as a booking agent with Trans World Airlines (TWA). Jim and Sharon both enjoyed traveling throughout the United States.

     Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 8, 2008, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, in Dubuque. Visitation will be two hours prior to the services at the funeral home. Cremation rites will be accorded following the services, with interment at Mt. Calvary Cemetery at a later date.

     The family would especially like to thank the nurses and staff of Community Hospice of Peoria and Sharon’s brother, Terry, for their care and concern for Jim.

     Local arrangements have been entrusted to Clary Funeral Home in Peoria.
